AI plays a multifaceted role in pharmacy education, including personalized learning, simulations, virtual laboratories, clinical decision support, and the discovery and development of drugs. Additionally, there is a common misconception that AI and robotics are synonymous. Whereas it refers to the simulation of human intelligence in computers.
  • AI empowers students, educators, and researchers to improve learning and patient care.

Applications of AI in Pharmacy Curriculum

  • The integration of AI tools in classroom teaching is crucial. The capabilities of AI can be leveraged in education through:
  • (1) Tailored content delivery that adapts to each student’s learning pace; (2) Automated AI assessments for quizzes and exams, offering prompt feedback; (3) Virtual patient simulations for hands-on clinical training, forecasting learning patterns, and pinpointing struggling students; (4) Access to enriched educational materials like case studies, research papers, and video lectures.
  •  AI tools empower educators to create engaging, adaptive, and systematic learning environments that prepare pharmacy students for the complexities of their future roles.

Challenges with AI

  • Addressing Ethical Considerations are crucial as educators embrace AI for teaching. The key ethical considerations are:
  • (1) Clarity in the collection, utilization, and protection of student data; (2) Addressing potential biases in training data to guarantee equitable treatment of all students; (3) Protecting student data privacy through informed consent; (4) Making AI-enhanced educational resources available to every student; (5) Continual assessment of AI tools to uphold a constructive learning atmosphere.

Preparing Future Pharmacists

  • AI Applications training for Students are vital to ensure ethical and correct use of such tools. A study on students from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland demonstrated limited formal education on applications of AI in medicine.
  • The steps to effectively integrate AI into education are: 
  • (1) Learning foundational concepts on AI including machine learning (ML), neural network, and natural language processing (NLP); (2) Learning real world applications of AI in healthcare systems and industries; (3) Providing practical exercises on AI and encourage to provide AI oriented solution to pharmacy-related problems; (4) Collaboration with computer science or data science departments to provide workshops on AI.
